Dustin Penner of the Edmonton Oilers?
When Penner was playing well in the playoffs last season I said he was going to be a big time star in NHL some day. He’s not a Crosby or Jagr; but he’s going to get you 70-80 points a season and help you in the playoffs. They guy is big and if you haven’t seen him play a lot, he has really soft hands. The guy’s going to be an amazing NHL player, (NHL 2010 cover worthy). Having said that, Burke won’t (never mind that he can’t) match that offer for Penner.
I don’t think this is what is best for Penner’s career progression. As big as he is, he is not a tough guy. He needs people around him to protect him. Either that or Eric Nesterenko needs to take him to the rink and let Penner beat the crap out of him so he will learn to fight, (Youngblood reference). As far as the timing, Kevin Lowe could have waited a day or two. Brian Burke was going into the Hall of Fame…that’s pretty cool. That’s like your girlfriend breaking up with you the day before your birthday. “It’s not you it’s me. Go have fun tomorrow and don’t worry about me.” C’mon! You and I both know we would both be pissed if that happened to us. At the end of the day, Penner will be rich, but unhappy and Ducks will have 3 draft picks from a team that will not even make the playoffs this next season. With next year’s draft looking very deep, I do not think this is the the worst case scenario. Penner is good but he’s not yet great though he will be some day.
What do you think?
Best,
David
