Spider Pig
I took my sons to see the Simpson’s Movie tonight. The movie started a little slow but managed to get some gut laughs early on. After all, what would a Simpson’s movie be without some cartoon full frontal nudity and a pig wearing “people clothes”, as Homer put it? I really liked the movie but should have waited for it on video. Here’s why:
- Ticket price. I spent $31.50 on 3 adult movie tickets. My kids are still in high school so they’re still children to me, (and I suppose they will always be). But to spend $10.50 on a single adult movie ticket is ridiculous. That’s not the fault of the Simpson’s except they should have come out with this movie when tickets were still $6.00 for a matinĂ© and $7.50 for any time general admission.
- It was like a longer, cruder Simpson’s episode. With the Bart’s penis flapping in the breeze and Marge’s gratuitous ‘G.D.’ bomb, I wasn’t impressed with the jokes that seemed a little forced fed into a movie that was otherwise the enjoyable, clever Simpson’s we all love.
- As far as I could tell, the only difference in the movie vs. the TV show was the length of the episode, the tempo of the character arc, and the shading on the characters.
Ok, that was the ‘bad’ and none of that was really horrible. There were some great comedy nuggets as always. Spider Pig, Moe as the emperor of Springfield, and of course Arnold as President of United States.
I recommend you rent this video but if you really want to watch a really long episode of the Simpsons, enjoy spending your $10.50. If you do spend you $10.50 to see it in the theater, be sure to stick around until the last credit has rolled. You’ll hear Maggies first word and all the lyrics to SpiderPig, plus the Springfield Anthem.
“Spider Pig, Spider Pig; does whatever a Spider-Pig does. Can he swing from a web; no he can’t he’s a pig. Lookout, he is a Spider Pig…”
What do you think?
Best,
David
